Ben joined Worcestershire in 2002 after a 12-year association with Leicestershire and he was appointed captain at New Road in just his second season. He made a tremendous start for his new county, becoming the first Worcestershire player to score a century on his first-class debut and then his County Championship debut.
A patient batsman, Ben registered over 1,000 first class runs in the 2001 season, and then emulated that feat again in 2002, 2003 - when he was player of the year - 2004 and 2005. Having relinquished the captaincy late in the 2004 campaign to concentrate on his batting, he made a fine start to the 2005 season and was rewarded with a two-year extension to his contract in June.
He flourished in 2005 and topped the county's championship batting averages with an average of almost 62 including six centuries - half his side's total for the season.Ben had a quiet season by his standards in 2007, but enjoyed a better year in 2008 averaging 45 in the Championship. |
